lightning effect

please anyone could suggest me a cheap method of doing a simalar to a lightning effect circuit, it is to be used with a 240V AC supply. can I use a strobe circuit or a circuit with a 4017 Thanks a lot

a strobe would work fine ,yes ..
you could pulse the strobe a few times per effect..

williB , will the strobe be capable of producing an effect similar of the flash of lightning, i.e. it has to be irregular in timings??

i suppose it would depend on how you trigger it..
but yes .. i was thinking of a quick flash , then a long bright strobe..

will 2 555 timers be able to do it.
i.e. one trigers the flash, the other the strobe
