if you look at "gear back view" you can see a nice picture of the gears that I need to keep track of. Thanks for all the help... I am currently looking around for encoders hopefully around that 50 dollar range that was suggested.
Just out of curiosity why would it be 2000 count... as opposed to say 2048
IE 2^10.... (I think or 2^whatever it is) I thought that they would be in forms of like count

I would consider using the worm end float as an indicator of direction.
This would give an indication of direction
before the later gearing moves,
because the end float has to be taken up before movement is transferred
along the gear train.
A non touching answer would be nice,
but using the end float is simple and easy to do.
