LCD-control with PIC

1) I have a PICDEM2 development board with an included program to control the LCD-display. It's very long, and I was hope that someone can give me a standard code, thats very simplified. Just in case, I use 4 bit.

2) I want to use all characters that the LCD-controller can use. Should I just send bits (8) to the PIC instead of writing the characters directly in the program window?
