Hi, starting school next week in electronics at porter chester institute in connecticut and was wondering what job field do you go into when you graduate? also what do you call yourself, I mean theres electricians, hvac, are we electronic engineers? or techs seems to be no specific field. My wife thinks I should take the electricion course which costs the same because of title and that electronics sounds like im working at radio shack.

I all depends if you like working with basically simple items such as switches, wiring, dimmers, two-way switching, heaters, etc etc etc. Or if you want to work with electronic items such as resistors, transistors, chips, microcontrollers, etc.

Then look around and see where you will be instantly employed and guaranteed employment for the rest of your life.

Everyone needs an electrician.

The decision is up to you.

I made an enormous amount of money providing electronic servicing of TV and audio equipment etc. But no-one gets their TV fixed these days.

It's thrown on the curb, the first time if goes on the blink.

You really have to go where the money is.

First I want to say that the word of any schools recuiter (or any info provided by the school) is suspect due to the nature of the job. Do the legwork.

Is the the

I would look long and hard at any trade school's offerings.
Morning and afternoon classes meet for 12 months and consist of 60 credit hours (1200 actual hours) of instruction. The attendance schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 12:40 PM or 12:50 PM to 6:00 PM.

Student loan default rate is a ballpark indicator of a schools goodness.
**broken link removed**
Porter and Chester Institute has a default rate about 10% which is on the high side.

Regardless of what the school is saying you will not learn enough to be an engineer in 12 months of 1/2 classes. You will be an electronic tech. Engineers study for at least 4 years (in the US).

I suggest you rethink you educational plans. At the very least check with your state edu people to see if the people graduating from this program (not just the school) are finding employment. It is difficult to determine if the people who find jobs have managed to keep them. Student loan default rate is some indication. But many of the people who do not find jobs in field of study will still manage to repay the loan.

If you want to be an electrican then take a program for electricians.
If you want to be an electronic tech I suggest you find a good 2 year school. (others may disagree and I respect that).
If you want to be an electronic engineer go to a good 4 year state school and get a BS EE.

Regradless of where you go spend the time to learn about the school. What sort of a track record do they have. And keep in mind the school itself is not the place to look for information. When you find information on the web, if it reads like a school release treat it as one.

Do you want to simply install alarms?

This is where the money is.

You should go to an alarm installation company and offer your time for two weeks FREE.

You will then be able to see how much or how little electronics knowledge you need to know.

I have seen electricians do this job for 15 years and only know positive from negative.

Many alarms are just “screw-it-together.” Most of the time is involved in running cables.

I provide modules for a wholesale security company. They run cameras in shops and department stores. Most of the equipment is “plug together.”
But the first thing is to offer your time for a few weeks and see for yourself, how much you will need to know.

Colin, in most states an alarm tech must be licensed and a background (criminal) check must be done. Some of my students end up in the alarm business, some would like to, but due to felony convictions they cannot. They cannot even work as a helper. I don't believe anyone would let you come to work for them without the proper background check or license, it could cause them to lose thier own license, bonding.

I do have a clean background and a diploma in basic crime scene its not that much but im fairly close to the casino's which have a ton of security euipment .I will check the state of connecticut regulations to see where the law stands on the license needed.

In Australia, anyone can start up a business, advertise in the local paper and install alarms. My son earns over $1,000 per day (on a good day). It's mainly the skill of running wiring in awkward locations that gives him so many jobs each day.
