Is this display burned out? (Sony MD LCD Display)

It's not an LCD, it's a VFD (Vacuum Flourescent Display), the mark is simply where the getter charge was fired during manufacture.

Most faults on VFD's are in the supply to them, as it's a valve it requires a heater supply and a high voltage supply - usually one or the other is missing.
