IR project for beginner

Looking for information on building a infrared sensor.

I am just starting to get into electronics and wanted to start with a simple
project, an active infrared sensor for the driveway. Nothing fancy simply
to activate a relay when the beam is broken, I have read something about
modulating the infrared frequency to account for ambient light and would
like to incorporate that into the project.

Found this link on google. Involves a 555 timer to pulse the IR led
to transmit and a receiver module on the other end, or a tuned band
pass filter if you want to learn about filters.

( I have been searching with Google for three days and I missed that site)
