Interfacing the serial port using C

Hi, i am doing a project for my final year degree and need to interface the PIC using C as the programming language. All i basically need to do is send and receive pulses through the serial port. I have done this before using QBASIC, but i need to do it in C this time, can anybody help me here. Any advice is much appreciated, Thanks.
