Well---- I think the circuit must be operating inefficiently. Let me simulate the circuit and get back to you.
 
The power in the 100 ohm resistor is about 800 mW, so yes use a 1 watt resistor. Also increase the 10K to 1 megohm for better efficiency.
 
What the - ?

Russlk, are you trying to drive the coil through the transistor's base???
 
This thread is almost 5 years old. I doubt Russlk is still trying to solve that problem. But then again, maybe he is persistent.

you can place a traic at primary of transformer and a pic should control this traic trhough opto isolator MOC3021.
pic should control phase angle according to battery condition and current at output.
but i have no code of pic .
