I2C master configuration of PIC18F4620

Hi,
I am using PIC18F4620 to interface with a sensor in I2C. What sort of commands are needed to initialize the I2C master and what are the commands needed for reading and writing to the sensor? I am using SWPutcI2C () and SWGetsI2C() commands but i always get the same values.
