So i just opened up a pair of some Xuron ESD shearcutters I got in the mail and it reeks of tobacco smoke. I'm not sure how to get it off...100% isopropyl doesn't seem to do much. Would vinegar? It seems it's used on carpets and cloths and things. I'm just wondering whether it won't react with the ESD rubber. I'm not sure what kind of rubber it is. It's black and so I assume it's carbon filled but then it could be anything.

Try washing it with water and a mild detergent.

Hi dknguyen,

you could try a weak solution of ammonium chloride also known as "salmiac".

It will remove the smoky smell and replace it with the smell of chicken sh..t for a while but it evaporates pretty fast with no smell left over.

Salmiac is also used to clean brass. Watchmakers use it to clean the entire mechanics of old clocks.

coal, the carbon in the coal will netralise the smell, just throw in a couple of lumps and shut the box for a few days.
