How to build an InfraRed remote control for a beginner ?

Hi all,

I have small car (toy) which can go forward, backward, turn left, right .

I want firstly small Infrared circuit (transmitter and receiver) to go forward only when i press a button then in advanced stage we will move it in all directions.

I'm a beginner so please help me.

I know that we can use 555 timer to drive infrared transmitter with known frequency but i don't understand the function of each part on the receiver

You can use any TV remote for a transmitter. You'll need a microntroller and programming skills for the receiver.
