How do you control LED DOT matrix displays?

There are different ways of controlling a dot matrix display, but how do you control them?

  • Using lathes/FFs to switch between columns/rows

  • Using DEMUX's to control each specific column/row

  • Using matrix LED display drivers etc. MAX6952 or MAX6953 (using one for each 4 5x7 displays)

I'm making this poll to get an overview of other peoples control of LED DOT matrix displays. You may therefore willingly give a reason for your answer.

Personally, I use LCD's. There are several of them that have the HD47780 controller that allows you to program them easily from a microcontroller.
