Sorry for this ridiculous newbie question, but I am following Nigel's
excellent pic tutorial site, and I was wondering if the Hitachi HD44780
comes with a .100 pin interface, or if I have to solder wires onto the
display and hook the wires into my own molex connector.

Thank you.

The HD44780 usually comes in an 80-pin TQFP package. However, it usually comes already mounted onto a pcb. What kind of connections exist on that PCB is really dependent on the design of the PCB itself. They usually come with just a row of 0.1 pins. Whatever you want to do with them is really up to yor preference.

All the ones I have use 0.1 spacing, the wires and MOLEX connectors are for convenience - it's FAR easier to mount the display if it's on wires and a plug.
