Help with testing stepper motors

Hello,

I'm trying to find a way to test a stepper motor for a car speedometer. Does anyone have a suggestion on a simple way to do that. I've been told all I need is a signal generator, but I'm not too familiar with them to know what type I need or how to use it. Any help would be appreciated.
