Help with led display

Hello everybody,
I am trying to build a 7 x 30 scrolling message display and would like to use cascaded shift registers to provide the 'column data' as I want to scan the rows and not the columns (to achieve good intensity) Can anybody suggest any shift registers to use. I am considering using the 74HC595?

I will be using a pic to control it.
