Help with interface for MM5451 display driver

Could someone help me with a simple interface, for the Micrel MM5451 display driver? I want it to turn on discrete L.E.D.'s, one after the other; in a light chaser type application...similar to the 4017 cmos Johnson Counter.

I'm from the old school LSI days but I'm willing to learn 'PIC' stuff...thanks..
