Anybody have idea about how can I convert 12V to 3.3V.

I know LM317 but the STDBY current is to hi for my solar application.

The regulator drive a digital cam and draw ±400mA stdby and ±900mA peak.

Thank's for your reply.

with a heatsink wont the lm317 manage that current?
well u could use a transistor to boost the current output like in this app

National Semiconductor has some switched mode regulators they call simple switchers. They only require a few parts and are much more efficiant than a linear regulator. I think they also have an interactive design tool that will calculate the component values. It's online at their website.

It's possib;e to construct a small switching regulator with an LM317 (see datasheet).

If you don't wan't to do that, it's pretty easy to build a switching regulator from a couple of transistors.
