Guitar fx input memory module

You know when you are toying with the settings on a guitar effects processor but have to repeatedly play a note, then twiddle the effect, then play another note, to see if there's any improvement? You don't have to play guitar to know what i mean.
I was planning to throw together a device which records 2-3 secs of my notes onto RAM and then loops the audio and plays into the fx processor so that i don't just use the preset patches and get more use out of the differences.
Anyone have any idea how i would do this? :)
