Good Circuits To Build As A Beginner

As some of you may have possibly read in one of my older post's from a week ago I literally tried to bite off more than I can chew(lm386 amp + LED) and I was wondering which types of circuits are good for beginners to build other than some basic LED circuits?
I tried starting off with projects way above my current skills

Anyone knows how to remove some shiny black laquer often found on top of components, probably to obscure their make?

I suggest an electronic lab kit. Some are relatively inexpensive and they are an easy, solder-less way to experiment with and learn about many different simple circuits.
