ESR of Capacitor

Hi,

I have a few questions regarding ESR of capacitor:

1. How to calculate ESR from datasheet?

2. for most low ESR capacitor, there are in SMT package. The problem is, I need to do breadboard prototyping, which SMT will be very inconveniece. how to get around with that?

You don't!, it should be listed in the datasheet - failing that you measure it.

I would have thought exactly the opposite?, SMT electrolytics are much smaller than conventional ones, and ESR is generally improved with larger capacitors - it's also advantageous to use a higher voltage electrolytic as well, a 470uF 63V will have a lower ESR than a 470uF 16V.

Just solder some wire onto either side of the SMT package.

you can also buy / make SMT to DIP adapters (maybe you can't buy one for a resistor though).
