EDO RAM as Shift Register

I understand that ram can be used as shift register. I havev got 2Mb EDO RAM from one of my old computers. Can i use it as shift register and how? I want to light about 250 LEDs arranged in a sequence giving a running light effect.
Any suggestion is welcome.
