Eagle: Thermals for vias?

I define a pour using POLYGON, the normal parts get thermals as desired, but the vias get no thermals ... how do I enable thermals for via pads?

the attached picture is worth 1000 words or something like that ;)

I'm assuming you want thermals around the vias in order to fill them with solder. Why do you want to fill them?
 
well perhaps there is a more proper way to do what I'm doing

this is a single sided layout, but I'm using VIAs as jumpers, for hard wired connections that will be made on the component side. so having the thermal breaks in the pour just makes it easier to solder.
