A friend of mine has a book I borrowed recently called "Cnc Robotics - Build Your Own Workshop Bot". It's from McGraw-Hill books, written by a guy named Geoff Williams. He shows how he built a cnc router/engraver/drill himself. It looks like a pretty good how-to book. A Google search should tell you where you can get a copy.
