does xbee require an encoder-decoder?

does xbee transmit and receive module require an encoder and decoder circuit?
actually i want to send data(both numbers and some character or strings) from computer to atmega32 and vice versa.so i would like to know is it possible to do without the encoder-decoder.if so how can i do it...
