Do I need to use a diode with a very basic CRT?

I'm working on a project using a very simple CRT. (Just the cathode and anode). Do I need to use a rectifier on the cathode of the CRT? Will it rectify by itself?

The quick answer is yes, but there may be some rather odd side effects which render the scheme useless.
