Hi I am trying to custom build a digital camera that will be used for wildlife surveillance.
I am looking for ideas and component recommendations. My general design is the same as most cameras already manufactured. a general outline of project is as follows.
• Digital color CMOS imager 1.3 mega pixel or higher.
• Low LUX imager for better night time images.
• Low power consumption (powered off standard batteries preferable size “D”)
• Storage to a media card of any format. (Memory stick smart media etc...)
• Inferred & motion sensor for activation of the camera to take an image and record events.
• Programmable delay of activation 5 sec to 5 min. in 5 sec intervals.
• Video capture in any format (Quick time MPEG etc...)
• Flash or led illumination.
• User interface HMI with menus to set the following modes.
o Set Day/night time operation
o Set time & date
o Set event delay time for picture
o Set video capture time (up to 1 min)
o Set flash on/off/auto
o View # of events and time and # of images and time stored
o Clear /Archive images & events
• Other possible features NTSC output for viewing images in the field with a hand held TV.
• Integrated LCD screen for viewing images in the field.
• Solar powered option.

This is the same design as most manufactured camera available at retailers.
Most low end manufactured digital “trail cameras” use a off the shelf digital camera and intergraded with a PIR trigger & Timer /event board. This design is cheaper but uses more power and requires frequent battery changes. Higher end manufactured “Trail cameras” utilize custom components to make their unit. High end cameras cost & $600 & up. Looking to buy & assemble off the shelf electronic components with minor modification to assemble in a weather tight enclosure.
