There were some silicon problems with the first version that were fixed in the A version.

Edit, can't find correct errata sheet.

The A versions of all the PIC's are just later silicon revisions.

It's not generally to fix any faults in the original one, but I suspect just a different (cheaper?) manufacturing method.
