Hello. Newbie here. :)

I recently got one of **broken link removed** (5xp model) and it doesn't seem to be able to take current readings. I can take voltage and test for continuity just fine but when I switch the red test lead to the mA socket and select a non-current setting I don't get a warning tone nor do any values show when I put it in current test mode and apply it to a circuit. Is it busted?

Try replacing the fuse.

To measure current, you need to break the circuit and connect the meter in series with the circuit you're measuring. Connecting the meter across the circuit will blow the fulse and could damage the meter.

You get a warning tone because the multimeter is telling you that if you measure a voltage when it's in current mode then it'll blow the fuse.
