Detecting amount of light

I'm working on a project where I need to be able to detect the amount of light that is hitting a sensor.
This needs to be used in an MCU, what would you guys recommend?

Voltage divider consisting of an LDR and a fixed resistor tied to an ADC input pin. Find an LDR that has ~5K in direct light. Write back with a link to a datasheet, and I will work out the resistor...
