thanks for the help terry. sorry for the late reply. appreciate it.

another thing....the IC you recommended is out of stock in my country. could I use an alternative such as the TEXAS INSTRUMENTS LM224N

Looking at the data sheet,I see no reason why the LM224N shouldn't work ok. the internal circuit appears the same,so it's worth a try,these ICs are pretty cheap,I get my 324s from Maplins & ebay,for less than £1 each.
Just had a look on ebay,you can get 25 LM324N for $9.65cents, post free.
or 5 for $1.60 plus $1.90 p&p.
