CRT monitor horizontal shrinking

My CRT monitor horizontal is shrinking into several pixels of vertical at the center of the screen.
- Checked already, & found burning resistor that goes to a transistor(TIP 31C) attach to heatsink.
- I've replaced the resistor & transistor, but still the same symptom.
- Found a coil series to the resistor become extremely hot.

Help, please...

Make and model of the scope and are you working with a schematic or just using a shotgun approach?
