Controlling RC Vehicle over Internet

Hello,

I've always had this idea of wanting to control an RC car over the internet or some other type of communication protocol. I know a lot of people use Xbees and WiFi modules for short range or some times a few miles, but I want to go overseas.

So I'm looking for information on how can I make this possible and which ways are best to do it. One way I was thinking was to use one of those wifi hotspot modules and communicate with the RC Vehicle that way, but there might be too much of a delay/lag with transmitting/receiving data, even worst if I wanted to add video. So I'm trowing this out to see what kind of responses I get.

I suppose its not much different than controlling a web cam from afar...... Trouble is, as you said, lag!! when we control the web cam in florida, the video is more than 5
seconds behind..... With an RC you'll have crashed before you see t...

This might give you some ideas. From another forum, in 2005. The rest of the topic is at **broken link removed**
Hello.
I have developed a system to remote control something over the
Internet at my university LTH in Lund, Sweden. So I made a prototype 2 as a battle tank.
It is a model of a Stuart M5 Tank with a paintballkanon,
laserdoomweapen and red dot aim.
You can look at some pictures and movies here. https://www.gamereality.se/images/spegelbild.JPG https://www.gamereality.se/images/spegelbild2.JPG https://www.gamereality.se/images/spegelbild3.JPG https://www.gamereality.se/images/frm00004.jpg https://hem.passagen.se/gamereality/Klipp1.wmv https://hem.passagen.se/gamereality/Klipp2.wmv https://hem.passagen.se/gamereality/Klipp3.wmv

Thanks for the info guys.
See those are all cool projects, but they are limited to the range of the WiFi AP. I would need my WiFi AP to be mounted on the vehicle itself so that I really have unlimited range. My idea is to mount a cell phone or a 4G adapter on the car to provide the connection to the internet so that the vehicle itself is also a WiFi hotspot.

I think this might do it (or something similar):
