Did you read the data sheet? The first paragraph states "Home automation modem, ASK power-line modem, EN50065-1 and EN50065-2 compliant, home lighting and appliance control".

It's used for transmitting and receiving digital data; is simple, uses a carrier, and is generally restricted to low data transfer rates. ASK modem is one of many ways to transmit and receive digital data.
