bi-directional switch
You can use a 16-bit bus switch, like the 74CBTLV16245. These come in a very small-outline package; two 8-bit switches in a larger footprint might be easier to solder. No drive capability (acts as a low series resistance) and <1 nS propagation delays. Another nice feature of these parts is that you can use them to translate from 5V logic to 3.3V (requires a diode in series with the Vcc supply line, some parts in the family include it).
btw, what's wrong with a small outline '16245? It requires one more control line (direction) than the bus switches do, but it is a bi-directional tri-state buffer.
