I can go back to School starting next! Yay. On one condition
I promise I will cease to sell or otherwise conduct a business on School premises and I sign some paper that effect.
I did however offer advice and a ebay link to someone at School that was interested in magnetic smart cards, and I did of course charge for my time. The person I helped isnt the one selling cards though.
What is daft is the fact that they could easily encrypt the cards with a micro add on for each machine, it could do the encryption and decryption and just pass the plain data in TCP/IP or RS232 inside the machine simples. I doubt they will do that though. Making the cards secure without a major overhaul of the vending machine isnt hard and as luck would have it I already have a pic 18f1320 ready to demonstrate .
If there nice to me I will also tell them why the registration system dosnt work properly. But I dont think they will go with my offer
There are people selling fake cards (s somewhat illegal activity) and they bust you for doing a simple legal (in any sensible place) transaction with your cubes.
You have my sympathies.
The bit that gets me is, NO ONE knows its the cards!! NO ONE has even caught on that the cards can be so easily done. But to be fair I only knew because someone asked me how hard would it be to clone our school cards so someone else could 'clock' us in and out for registration. I didnt know and I assumed that as the cards were chip type they would be encrypted, so I did some experiments on mine. I quickly found out that the chip isnt used, and the data when I swiped the card was plain ASCI. So I went back and said it would be very very easy to clone the cards and to prove this I had erased an old credit card of dads and put my school card details on the mag strip of it, then when we went to a class I used the credit card to open the doors.Good grief LG, I did not think that the card system would be as simple as that!

NO WAY!!! but I would consider 5% net profit, if they allowed me to have a small section in the school shopHe's not giving the system it 20% under the table kickback/protection money on his sales. That's the problem.
You will end up making more then them.to be honest I got the feeling the problem wasnt the fact I had money on me, I dont know why but they dont like the fact I make money??
He is afraid you are smarter then him. Also the teacher that actually kicked off about it and made a real fuss at the meeting with mum and dad really dosnt like me
What they need to do is network the vending machines! The stupid thing about that system is you don't even need to understand it, just clone your card each morning and double your money.
The amazing thing is that I tried this in the early eighties with a bank card. At that time ATMs went offline at night and weekend. I realized the only way they could keep track of how much you had drawn out was by writing it to the card. I tried reading my card, taking out my daily limit and then writing back the earlier data. Voila, it worked. A friend and I worked out that over an Easter weekend and with 10 cards you could spend 5pm Thursday to 9am Tuesday emptying ATMs. Could have been a profitable venture back then. BTW, we didn't have a card reader/writer but modified tape decks and software on a C64 that we were using to experiment with tape protection systems, another interesting project.
LG, back to your problem, I agree with your dad, you shouldn't have to stop. I wouldn't bother offering to fix there system as even encrypted cards would still work if simply cloned. The only way to fix it would be to read the whole card and keep a log that can be checked periodically against other records. I guess a micro + SD card would suffice.
Have fun,
Mike.

Are you going to be using the school cards for payment? LOLnew pay scheme sorted out and no need for cash at school
Ya could be good or bad, lets hope good and good luck!apparently they want to take me and one of my parents to the uni for a day
You will need to measure around your head. I would suggest a cloth tape measure like tailers use.oh and the other strange bit is I have to find out what size hard hat fits me
