Automatic gate opener

hey everyone.. i just wanna ask if somebody know how to make an auto-gate opener. My professor ask our group to make a prototype university wherein, the gate will open automatically. I've seen those recent post but the circuit i think is for the car. How about if the circuit is for the gate.. Do you get my point? My professor mentioned about proximity sensor something and i don't get it. He even mention bar codes in the car. Can you help me guys?

They are normally simple IR beam breakers, you drive your car towards the gate (breaking the beam) and the gate opens for you.

Yes, normally there will be a keypad (or R/C) on the outside, and beam breakers on the inside.
