I'm just a hobbyist.

It depends what "professional" means.

It could mean someone who works in a company and does electronics for a living at it, or it could mean (to a lesser extent) someone that is very good with electronics.

'Professional' simply means you get paid for doing it, it doesn't actually give any indication of your degree of competance - although it's often used (incorrectly) in that way.

Like Audioguru, I'm both professional and hobbyiest.

Hobbyist for now
It sounds like you are not sure.
Previously a professional?
Planning to be a professional?
Maybe neither?

Stay as a hobbiest no matter what you do. It's fun.

Does designing a wireless beeper system for my friend's shop to detect when someone walks in teh door make me a professional??

Hi pro Zach,
Sure you're a professional now.
Hobbiests are selfish but you're making something for someone else. Maybe he'll pay you with a case of beer!

An Attitude

I am a student and intend to continue in this field...

So I count myself as a professional. Not that I am being paid or anything...

I believe that professionalism is an attitude.

I am not watching this thread... So please PM me if you want to say something that you expect me to reply to.

i think it is a bit hard for me to be a professional at 14(nearly 15!!!!!!!!!!)

Unfortunately that's not the case.

A 'professional' is merely someone who gets paid for doing something, competance doesn't enter into it - although 'professional' is often wrongly used to signify competance. Certainly you see a LOT of very highly paid professionals who are not very good at what they do!.

As you don't qualify as a 'professional', how about 'expert' instead?.
