Anybody knows how to increase the walkie talkie range?

With these requests to increase the range of toy radios, ...... , but nobody ever considers the possibility of improving the receiver.
Why is that?
The receiver is usually a single transistor super-regen. It can't be improved because it is such a cheap poor circuit.
 
The FRS/GMRS UHF walkie-talkies have a double or triple conversion superhet receiver with a sensitivity of about -123dbm, which is about as good as you can get, short of special low-noise front ends. However, by regulation, they are not supposed to be used with a remote antenna.

If you could send me the details on how to make a backpack mounted antenna that would be much appreciated.
Essentially what I am trying to build is a SATCOM.
