There are plenty of ASICs out there made for a specific product and nothing else. In such a case you will not be able to get a replacement except from the mfg, which may be unlikely.

Just information on what it does. I'm studying this old-fashioned circuit. In fact, I believe it's not a commercial type. Most likely to be an ASIC as you've said.
If it's an ASIC there's going to be next to nothing you can learn from the part number. Like Hero said, scope the leads from it and trace where the leads go on the board will give you a better idea of what the chip does than asking about it will, though a few good in focus high resolution pictures of several angles of the main board might help.
