I can see the Civil Liberties Union having a field day with this situation if it were to happen in America! This woman employee is prolly on her way to patching cracks on the Great Wall somewhere up north!

Kind of depends. Where I work, there lots of people just show up thinking that's all they really need to do for their paycheck. Really pisses me off to one of them say "no, it's not my job", and I barely maintain, when that supervisor walks over to me, asks me to drop what I'm doing, and take care of it.

Usually, arguing with the boss is a bad idea, use to get people fired. Now days, just means you don't have to work if you don't feel like it.

$4.00 doesn't seem like a huge fine, unless that's a week's pay for her or something.

That's the same the world over, although there are no doubt some striking differences between labour opportunities in China and the U.S.

Still, I know I come off as a bit of a socialist, but I actually respect the hierarchical model upon which most companies (or teams, or groups) are run. It just seems to work better for everyone if someone's job is to be the leader, the captain at the wheel, if you will. Directly contradicting your employer isn't going to get you anywhere, there's always a better solution (go to your union, whistle-blowing, quitting and working somewhere else). I love the unofficial motto of the U.S. Air Force: "Lead, follow, or get out of the way." When you're hired by someone, you're paid to be a follower - that's your job over all else, even if you're hired to be C.E.O. of a company. If you don't like it, get out of the way, do something else you do like.
