well, you dont seem to understand the "capacity " of a battery mesured in Ah. it reffers to how much energy a battery can store in. a battery that has a cpapacity of 1Ah can supply a current of 1A for a time of 1h.
that means that if you have a 6v battery with 4.5 Ah it has an energy stored in of 4.5A x h x 6V=27Wh(V x A = W)
so if you connect 2 6v/ 4.5Ah in series you willl get an equivalent battery of 12v/4.5Ah, that compared to 12v/2Ah means that it will just last longer and you have more energy avaliable to the circuit, nothing else.
just make like a really simple inverter.....with a 555 timer or just a couple of transistors and capacitors... make it like 10k Hz, amplify it with whatever you have...a couple power transistors or mosfets and run it through a transformer. depending upon the current you are going to draw you could just order one up. the only thing is that the transformer will take up some space.
but i dont get what your problem is in having a 4.5Ah battery instead of a 2Ah.
you just have more energy, that's all. you can use your robot for more time.

Of course connecting two 6v batteries in series will increase the size and weight - but not necessarily by much more than a 12v battery of the same capacity. But do you have to use 4.5Ah?
6v batteries are made in various capacities by companies like Yuasa, and should be readily available at most reputable stockists. Part numbers are:
NP1.2-6 1.2Ah
NP2.8-6 2.8Ah
NP4-6 4Ah
NP7-7 7Ah
to name just a few.
This approach would be simpler than doing a voltage doubler.
But then again, there is no shortage of comparible 12v units.

With all the domestic intruder alarms needing backup batteries there must be hundreds of sources. Try one of these. They are from the Maplin (UK) catalogue.
If you can afford to go below your original 2Ah then the smallest leadacid I can see is the 12v 800mA (NP0.8-12) made by Yuasa.
As an alternative have you considered NiMh batteries? My digital camera uses AA 1.7Ah cells. Ten of these would do the trick and may be more readily available where you live.
