5 volt chip from 24 volt transformer

If this is audio, a switcher might be a bit much for someone new. It takes a bit of experience to keep switcher byproducts away from low level audio.

If you already have 32V rails (earlier, you didn't say so) then any of the regulators from LM7805 to LM317 would work. They don't need a heat sink, but you can avoid unpleasant temperatures and increase reliability with one.

If you would rather, a 330 ohm 1/2 watt resistor on the input of the regulator would take some of the heat and make it run cooler.
