Hi,

Anyone know of a device or something I could buy that would convert a 44 pin PLCC to a 40 pin DIP. Or some other way of mounting the 44pin PLCC without SMD soldering? I have to built a lot of these and don't have the skill or patience to SMD solder each part.

Thanks,
Ben

PLCC is not intended to be mounted on the surface, it can be but it's not the best way. PLCC packages have connectors/sockets designed for eiter surface mount or through hole mounting.

Does it have to be converted to 40pin DIL, you will loose 4 pins. If this is a must, you could use one of the above connectors, mount it onto a board with tracking to two SIL 20pin headers in the right place. Alternatevely you could buy an adapter, like the microchip ones with a ZIF sockets, these are about £50 each though.

The adapters look a bit like this

It's not a very good picture but it should give you an idea. You can see the rows of pins on the bottom. The ZIF socket on top can be exchanged for a normal PLCC socket to save cost.

Hi

the PLCC package is designed for surface mounting, however if you need a DIL converter they are fairly cheap and available under the name Adaptics and others from a number of suppliers.

For example: part No. 229-5575 from RS in the UK http://www.rswww.co.uk
