    AC Crossflow/Barrel Fan Speed Control

Thanks for your help. I hadn't noticed the 'Sync' input on the micro, but what you described makes sense. I think I'll try a basic ac motor speed controller and see what happens ... I know I've got one out in the workshop somewhere. I have been looking for a generic design that includes a...

    AC Crossflow/Barrel Fan Speed Control

Hi, I'm after some help please on a fan control setup for a 240V AC fan motor. I'm building a project that requires a reasonable size fan so went to a friends scrap yard and found a nice looking fan and motor from the indoors portion of a split system aircon. It's a crossflow or barrel fan...

    What went wrong? Help please!

My thoughts are that it is certainly possible that they just died from age. I don't see that many used nowadays for some reason. Lots of varistors and plenty of them deteriorate from heat and age.

Momentary push button DPDT switch with alternate action

Wow, awesome circuits ... thanks Gophert. The leds would be useful to help prevent problems if the system runs out of water too. And small enough to bury in silicone for waterproofing. Certainly beats a H-bridge and an Arduino. :) I've been waiting for the guy to message through more of the...

Momentary push button DPDT switch with alternate action

Haha, I have no idea. Bear in mind, this is a fire fighting nozzle designed to be held with one hand while leaning out the window of a ute while driving around the edges of a fire. It's not some two man fire hose setup.

Momentary push button DPDT switch with alternate action

Nope, originally it had a latching push button switch ... so you could click it on ... concentrate on fighting the fire ... then click it off to stop it. What he was trying to get away from was having someone run out of water ... leave the switch ON ... and burn out the solenoid. A...

Momentary push button DPDT switch with alternate action

Yes, changing to a latching relay removed the need to hold down the button continuously. That is the main gist of his requirement. Re the switch and the solenoid ... the switch is definitely out at the nozzle ... but I don't know for certain about the solenoid ... I had the impression it...

Momentary push button DPDT switch with alternate action

I didn't ask that question, but he did say the switch is on the hose near/next to the nozzle ... and not remote ... ... so it seems to me it must be fed along the hose ... tied to or taped ... dunno. Apparently this is for small mobile units where the driver hangs (his arm) out the...

Momentary push button DPDT switch with alternate action

Sorry, been working. Okay, the firefighting nozzle has a latching solenoid in it to turn on and off the flow. From the guys explanation, it requires a 12v pulse to latch it on, and a reversed 12v pulse to turn it off. He explained that from his experience fighting fires, it was really...

Momentary push button DPDT switch with alternate action

Nah, he'd know when it swapped. It is to turn on (and off) a firehose nozzle so I'm pretty sure it'll be obvious. :)

Momentary push button DPDT switch with alternate action

Preview Thank you AK ... and I was slowly coming to the same realisation about the switches. Edit: Sorry, the rest of my reply vanished!!! I definitely agree that an Arduino would be overkill and should be able to do it far more simply ... in fact I think it could be done with a 'normal'...

Momentary push button DPDT switch with alternate action

Yes, that is exactly what I thought of too ... but when I put it to the guy, he was adamant that he wanted a pushbutton switch. I did find a fairly flat rocker switch that appeared to work like the toggle switch you mentioned above ... maybe that'll appeal to him. :)

Momentary push button DPDT switch with alternate action

Thanks Terry, that was the same conclusion I came to after spending ages going through catalogues and datasheets. I was hopeful when I saw 'Alternate Action' as well ... but I ended up with the impression that was for latched switches, where one push closes one set of contacts and the next...

Momentary push button DPDT switch with alternate action

No, he has no idea what an Arduino even is ... that was what was recommended to him. Since he has asked my opinion, I'm suggesting he avoids using an Arduino to keep his job as simple as possible ... and I'm just trying to come up with ways to help solve his problem.
