when i worked for NAD, they had one of the early AM/FM receivers that used electronic tuning, and the original design used 1N4148 diodes to isolate the tuning memory circuit from the power supply when the power was turned off. the "battery" was a 250,000uf supercapacitor. unfortunately, 1N4148...
i once worked at a TV shop that had a bench set aside for reforming caps. it had several power supplies, and a selection of resistors appropriate for whatever caps were being reformed. one of the "tricks" my boss used, was if he needed (for instance) a 10uf/100V cap, he would take a 25uf/50V...
one thing to keep in mind, is that you have TWO closely spaced plates, and the current in one plate is traveling in the opposite direction of the current of the other plate. therefore most of the magnetic effects of one plate are cancelled by that of the other plate. so the effective series...
you might see if the authors of the articles maintain websites currently. they just might, and have the code available. i am pretty sure Don Lancaster, and Forrest Mims III still have active websites.
some old test box systems won't work with a DOS emulator under windows, because windows uses hardware virtualization, and some of those old systems had proprietary cards that required the software to talk directly to the hardware. things like data acquisition, motor driver, programmable...
i built a tube preamp using subminiature tubes. it didn't work well with 12V B+. upping the plate voltage to 24 worked ok though. the tubes were rated at 100V plate voltage, so the gain, while adequate for the application (tube fuzz distortion pedal/ tube preamp), it wasn't nearly what it...
i used to build mine with oil furnace transformers, but pretty much the same circuit. i made my own HV caps out of plate glass, and aluminum foil. don't know why anyone would use HVDC in the primary, although it might work ok if you were using a rotary gap as opposed to a continuous spark gap.
