    Portable generator questions, really confused

I want to thank everybody for the valuable information, and knowledge. The award goes to KEEPITSIMPLESTUPID... It turns out that eliminating the second neutral/ground point in the generator did the trick. Everything is running up to speed. So, the lesson of the day is when hooking a portable...

    Portable generator questions, really confused

KEEP ITSIMPLE... I'm definitely gonna try it your way before I do anything else. Haven't had time in the last couple days. I did, however, find the bond "jumper" wire in the GEN panel that connects the ground of one of the receptacles, to the neutral on another, and removed it. (and yes, I...

    Portable generator questions, really confused

Yes, mechanically governed. Just a single screw, really easy. Yeah, I'm not even close to that (HZ). Literally, with just one lighting circuit turned on, I was only reading 49-50 HZ at a bulb socket. That's it. When I used that meter on line power I was 59-61HZ. perfect. So the meter is right. I...

    Portable generator questions, really confused

This makes a lot of sense too. Basically, what you're saying is, you can't ground something twice. If it's grounded in one place, the presence of another connection somewhere else between the same 2 wires or set of wires is just a redundancy, and functionally makes no difference. Yes, in my...

    Portable generator questions, really confused

Got it! Now, to be clear, this should clear up any problems with motors (specifically) running at less than full speed, ie. furnace blower, and bathroom fans, or is the 50HZ that the generator is putting out instead of 60HZ still going to be an issue? And lastly, is there any reason why I can't...

    Portable generator questions, really confused

KEEPITSIMPLESTUPID. I'll bet #4 of your post is my problem. After thinking more about this, am I right to say that there should be only 1 bond between neutral and ground? If the neutral and ground are bonded in the generator, (which they are) they shouldn't be bonded in the panel also, right...

    Portable generator questions, really confused

Yes, the ground is bonded to the generator. but is not grounded to anything. Transfer switch, and main panel both grounded to water copper pipe. You're saying if I ground the generator to that copper pipe directly, it may solve the problem? I've done a ton of these transfer switches... never...

    Portable generator questions, really confused

I used a multimeter with a HZ setting for the Hertz measurement, and I have a tachometer that run off the spark plug wire for engine RPM

    Portable generator questions, really confused

Actually, it's not a kohler. I have one of those too, an older one. But this one is a "GENERAC" 389cc engine. Basically a Chinese version of the legendary Honda GX390. I only wish it was a Honda.

    Portable generator questions, really confused

OK, so here's what I found... My house's line power is 124 volts, and 59-62 Hertz. ALL appliances in the house, furnace included, are 60HZ. My generator is working at 3600 rpm (correct), and putting out 121-123 volts at the duplex receptacles, and around 245 at the twist-lock connecter (also...

    Portable generator questions, really confused

Definitely going to check the running RPM. I'll let everyone know the results

    Portable generator questions, really confused

The refrigerator "seems" to work ok. It is cooling/staying cool. I can't say for sure that it's running full speed though, because it's so quiet to begin with. It's possible that it's not running 100%. The generator states in the spec sheet that it's 60HZ, and runs at constant 3600RPM. I...

    Portable generator questions, really confused

Just stumbled upon this site. Hope someone knows what's wrong... I have a GENERAC GP5500 generator, (5500 watts running, 6875 watts surge) I wired a 6 position manual transfer switch (Reliant) in my home. I'll be as detailed as I can. switch A downstairs bathroom (15a) switch B T.V...
