Teardown: Epson colour printer

Blog entry posted in 'Teardowns', February 12, 2014.

    Hey,

I've been pretty occupied for a while now, graduation and work....and due the loss of any interesting stuff to write in blog. However, i did find this printer in local flea market (surprise....) for 2€:s so i won my money back pretty much straight away, because i got plastic bag and power cord without opening anything.

This model is that old it has parallel priner port, instead of serial/USB connection for data. I tried it before opening, to make sure it's alive, and it turned on ok. Motors and such took sweet time to settle to their places, but runned smoothly. I was pretty sure what would be inside: some sort of stepper motors, logic/power board (linear or SMPU?) and some sort of switches for position feedback.

Opening was pretty easy, due the fact there was many screws. Built quality was good also altogether, soldering too.
Wires which were used, were flat ones, like the ones found, say cameras etc.

Power supply was SMPU, with dual opto isolators. logic board had main cpu, memory, and other control units, like motor controls LB1845. Stepper motors were two 4-wire types, other had very small steps. Opto-switches were used as position switches.

thanks for reading, other stuff which i have waiting are media-center, and 3-phase 1.5kw motor speed controller.
    As always, comments welcome!
