Colour Maximite.... Part 2

Blog entry posted in 'Colour Maximite', February 18, 2013.

I have been using the little device for a little over a month... I have written some programs and some tunes.... I can get hold of "Fast Tracker" available via "Abandonware" ( various sites provide downloads ) ...

I have to run FastTracker via a dos box in XP and Vista ,but it's all good..

This is similar to Scream Tracker... The old Amiga mod editor..

The really bad news was that of a little PIC32 board the UBW32.... The little board kinda overheated... It was virtually impossible to power the device... I had a 12 volt power supply (wallwart) and the UBW32's tiny little linear reg's nearly fried... I dropped the voltage with a 8 volt reg first, but to no avail.... The reg's were still getting very hot...

Late January we saw the magic smoke and there was a very familiar smell..... The pic had a small hole and looked a bit helpless...

After a quick email to Geoff ( designer ) I was asking if I could run the Maximite from a chipkit MAX... The Chipkit MAX sports a PIC32MX795F512H, I thought it would be Ideal... Geoff didn't think it would as the USB was via a ft232 chip rather than the PIC32 itself...

Goeff recommended "Circuit Gizmo's" and in particular, their own "colour max board"

Well!! It took well over three weeks to get to me....

When it arrived I plugged it in... Replaced the software with Geoff's latest version... And tried to type a command..... Keyboard didn't work...
After close inspection we found the keyboard connector had two dry joints... Quick repair and we are up and going again.

The beauty of this new board is they have included the shield connectors ( Arduino compatibility). They have included a large proto type area
    and RS232 and RS485 circuits..

I can get on with my review of this great software now. I am going to write a couple of programs that use the OS to the max..

Well this is the end of the unscheduled PART 2... PART 3 will have to contain these details now.
