zero crossing detector

When can i use the zero crossing detector in my UPS ?

is it to :
1- to detect the ac interrupt .
2- when the AC return .
i use u controller (PIC).

A zero crossing detector is normally used to detect zero crossing of AC to synchronize triac firing with mains frequency of phase controlled units, such as dimmers and rpm regulator circuits for motors.
