A lot of times when building circuits, (such as op-amp circuits), you'll find that you need a power supply with both positive(+) and negative(-) rails, in addition to a common ground(gnd). It is easy enough to connect two batteries or two wall adapters together and use the center connection for your ground, but there are some problems with this. What if one battery goes dead faster than the other? What if you can't have or don't want two wall adapters hanging off the wall? What if you can't...

how about a switching version of this splitter for better power efficiency?

If one wants split rails and better efficiency, one can use a switched voltage inverter. For example, using a charge pump or inverting buck-boost converter to create a voltage that is the same magnitude, but opposite polarity to the input voltage. This gives you effectively two rails and a ground. The negative of the input will be the positive of the output, I.E virtual ground.

The problem with any switched rail splitter is that they can, by nature, inject lots of noise into your system. And they are more complex circuits. The above circuit is fairly simple and pure analog, so when built right it will not have any frequency with which to cause noise.

Even so, I actually was thinking of making a supper low noise simple voltage inverter some day.
